The original plan for ASKI Global Limited was a microfinance company that would assist the Filipino workers in Singapore to set up their own businesses with their families in the Philippines as well as leverage their remittances for productive purposes. Unfortunately, this was not allowed by legal requirements. Recognising that the Filipino workers need a true Filipino organisation that would understand them and their families' needs, former Chief Executive Officer Irma L. Cosico proposed that the Singapore operations become educational in nature, with the intention to provide microfinance loans to its students through their families in the Philippines. This resulted in the creation of the back-to-back training of migrant workers and their families in the Philippines as well as the concept of "crossborder microfinancing", which is essentially using part of the workers' remittances for productive purposes. With this programme institutionalised, the registration of ASKI Global Limited was approved by the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Board in July 2010 as a public company limited by guarantee.
The academic tie-up has always been important to Irma. She visited the National University of Singapore Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and was introduced to Professor Albert Chu-Ying Teo who, at that time, was also looking for a non-profit organisation whose community outreach programme is focused on entrepreneurship. The partnership between the two organisations was sealed after that fruitful introduction. During the entire process, two retired Singaporeans provided Irma with the necessary assistance.
Irma was then introduced to Attorney May Oh, who assisted with the legal procedures. Sue Chow, formerly with Deutsche Bank Singapore, was introduced to the organisation and helped in the financial set-up of the organisation. Professor Teo and Sue, alongside the two retired Singaporeans, became the local founding members of ASKI Global Limited, sharing the same vision with its founder Rolando Victoria. He, together with previous ASKI Philippines President of the Board of Trustees Maria L. Calling, completed the ASKI Global Board of Directors.
